History and Bookmarks

As you view markers on the map, bristolstreets.co.uk keeps track of your activities to make it easy for you to find things that you have already looked at. (See our privacy policy about what gets tracked where).

Browser History

Each time you click on a tab icon in the side bar or click on a marker to open its information window, your browser will add an entry to the browsing history. This means that you can use the back button in your browser to go backwards through the markers and modes that you have looked at in the current session.

History list

That is great but sometimes it is easier to see a list of markers which is why bristolstreets.co.uk also tracks the markers you have clicked, including the temporary markers you created by clicking on blank areas of the map. YOu can see these by clicking the "history" command in the control strip at the top of the page, or by clicking the "my stuff" icon in the side bar and then the "history" icon in that section.

For each marker in the history list, the name, a short description, the marker icon and a thumbnail of an image if one appears in the information window. The history list shows ten markers at a time and you can page back through many pages of past markers.

Clicking on a marker in the history list, move the map to show the marker and opens its information window.

If you visit a marker that is already in the history list, it gets moved to the front of the list as the list is always shown from most recent on the first page to oldest on the last.

My stuff list

If you know you will want to come back to a marker, you can add it to the "my stuff" list by clicking the "save" link in the marker's information window. The open box icon next to this link resembles the icon on the "my stuff" tab of the side bar.

The "my stuff" list looks and works just like the history list, except it only gets items you explicitly save into the list.

Removing items from lists

You can remove an item from the history or my stuff lists by clicking the cross in a circle icon in the top right corner of the item in the list. If the item appears in both lists, removing it from either list will remove it from both lists.

Clearing History

If you want to clear the items from the history list, you can click the "Delete all History & My Stuff" button which appears at the top of the history and my stuff pages. After a single confirmation warning it will clear the contents of both lists.

There is a checkbox over the history list labelled "keep history between sessions". If this is checked, the markers you visited in one session will still be in the list when you come back to the site in a future session (assuming you access from the same browser or are signed in, see "History over different sessions" below).

If the checkbox is not checked, the history list will be cleared when you quit your browser.

Bookmarking markers

Because opening a marker changes the location or url at the top of the browser page, it is possible to add a bookmark to your browsers bookmarks or favourites (or whatever your browser calls them).

Using the social bookmark links at the bottom of the map will only bookmark the main site and will not reflect any settings or markers of the current map view.

History over different sessions

If you browse on the site without signing in, an anonymous browsing history is maintained on the web server which is linked to your web browser using a cookie.

If you return to the site using the same browser, the marker history from previous sessions will be available in the new session. However, if you clear your browser cookies or use a different browser on the same or a different computer, you will not have access to past history. If the cookie is lost, so is your history.

If you have registered your email address on the site, then browsing history while signed in is maintained and associated with your address. This means you can access your browsing history from any browser on any computer once you have signed in.

Browsing history while signed in can only be viewed while signed in. So once you have signed off, the history and my stuff lists will revert to the anonymous lists associated with the current browser.

All history and my stuff lists kept on the web server are private and not examined or analysed by bristolstreets.co.uk (see the privacy policy for more details on what is logged and examined).
